Softwood lumber comes from coniferous trees, which are cone bearing and typically keep their foliage year-round. It's used for both structural and non-structural applications.
Structural Softwood Lumber
Structural applications include roof rafters and trusses, wall studs, floor joists and built-up beams and columns. Structural softwood lumber is graded in terms of its strength.
Non-structural Softwood Lumber
Non-structural applications include furniture, windows and doors. Non-structural softwood lumber is graded based solely on appearance.
