Working With A Builder
Congratulations! You've decided to build the home of your dreams.
Now, it's time to educate yourself so you can help manage the process
of home building.
A good place to start is by choosing a home builder. There are several
ways to approach the important decision. Look at the homes being built
in your area and pay a visit to those you like. Or, ask your friends,
family and neighbors to refer you to builders they've used. Other
sources for builder referrals and information include real estate
agents, mortgage lenders, architects, interior designers and subcontractors.
Once you find two or three builders whose homes you like, set up a
meeting. Treat this meeting as if you are interviewing a candidate
for a job. You will most likely spend the next several months with
your builder so you should feel comfortable working with each other.
Most importantly, ask for references and then check them. A good question
to ask the reference is, "Would you hire the same builder if you were
to build your house again?"
Use the meeting as an opportunity to discuss the different house plans
the builder offers and best fit your family's needs. Do you spend
a lot of time entertaining? Do you need a home office? Are you planning
on expanding your family? If needed, work with your builder to design
a plan that is custom made for your family's needs. Does the master
bedroom need a walk-in closet? Should the laundry room be on the main
floor or upstairs? After carefully weighing all the considerations,
it should be easier to select the best plan for your family's needs.
