Old vs. New
Most people opt for an existing home because of location and convenience. They're often built close to shopping, schools, and other services, and can offer the option of moving in quickly.
However, like many things, the perception that older homes are better built than newer homes is a combination of myth and truth. Structurally, both are likely framed with wood, which offers a number of advantages. But newer homes may benefit from improvements in structural lumber products and systems (such as composite wood beams) — which increases their stability. A new home's windows, heating and cooling system, and other finishes and functions are also vastly improved from homes built even a decade ago.
That said, the decision to purchase a new or existing home comes down to priorities. Are you willing to wait to build the home you want, or would you rather find an existing home that meets most of your needs and satisfies other considerations, such as neighborhood or a more convenient move-in date? |
